Let’s Get Plastered for Breast Cancer with Rural Women New ZealandLet’s Get Plastered for Breast Cancer with Rural Women New ZealandRural Women New Zealand had a whirlwind month in October as they persuaded 1600 women – and a few men – to ‘get plastered for breast cancer’.The beautiful breast sculptures that resulted were displayed in art galleries and cafes all around the country from Dargaville to Cromwell. Guest speakers including doctors, educators and breast cancer survivors ensured the events were not only great fun, but also raised breast cancer awareness. “You can’t easily plaster yourself, so the plastering ‘get-togethers’ broke down barriers and really got people talking,” says RWNZ National President, Liz Evans. In Wellington MPs led by Dr Jackie Blue, a breast physician herself, got involved, hosting a display of their breast casts at Parliament. Taupo MP Louise Upston even got plastered (discreetly) on 3News. “In Wanganui we had whole sports teams getting plastered, as well as five generations from one family, from great-grandma to baby. In Onewhero even had a rugby team who got plastered, which was a great way to remind men that they can be affected by breast cancer too.” Funds raised from the Let’s Get Plastered for Breast Cancer campaign will be presented to the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation at the RWNZ National Conference 2011 to be held in Auckland in May. If you’d like to ‘get plastered’ contact Rural Women New Zealand on (04) 473 5524 or email enquiries@ruralwomen.org.nz. Plastering kits cost $10 plus postage.
